Heanor Haulage Transporter HHT 4 XRA 790Y

XRA was the last of the Scammell based HHTs built by Heanor Haulage in the late 70s and early 80s. this particular truck began service in the early eighties.  The base vehicle a Scammell light weight contractor was originally an articulated dump truck.

The three previous Scammell based HHTs were powered by 8V92 Detroit engines.  XRA differed because it was powered by a CAT 3406  370 horse power  engine driving through a retarder into a fifteen speed fuller gearbox. The original Scammell steel day cab was replaced by a Volvo F88 sleeper cab, certainly in its day one of the best cabs on the market.  The cab now mated to the original Scammell bonnet was further  modified by the  removal of the engine tunnel to create a flat floor with more room for the driver.  The original Volvo dash, steering column, seats, and trim were retained. A Heanor built heavy duty front bumper incorporating the original Scammell radiator protector and featuring 8 5.5 inch headlights was added to compliment the original Scammel wings. Provision was retained for the original Scammell air filter.  A round replacement fuel tank including step access, a 3.5 inch coupling and Heanor built heavy duty rear wings completed the vehicle. The vehicle was used in articulated and ballast tractor form.

The HHTs were sold by Heanor when they changed their policy to run vehicles up to 100 tons. The HHTs were plated at 150 tons. XRA entered the fleet of Edmund Nuttall where it was used during the construction of the North Devon link road to carry concrete bridge sections for the Biddecombe Bridge. It was later purchased by Short Bros for use in the Port Talbot steelworks before going to Multiserv at the Teeside steelworks.  Bob Moody then bought it it in 2008 and completed a tremendous amount of work including shotblasting and the building of a new ballast box before it moved to York in 2009. Now starts the full restoration of the vehicle.
